How Rolex CPO certification works

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned certification isn't a marketing label — it's a rigorous technical process: the authorized dealer prepares and thoroughly services the watch, but the official certification itself is carried out by Rolex, through the headquarters of the dealer's country — or the relevant reference headquarters, for countries without one of their own.

1. Acquiring the watch

The dealer acquires the used watch — often from the secondary market or from a customer trading it in — and runs an initial eligibility check: model, reference, and overall condition must meet the program's criteria.

2. Authenticity verification

The watch is sent to the relevant Rolex headquarters, where every component is checked for genuine origin: case, movement, dial, bracelet, crown. A watch with non-original parts won't pass certification until those parts are replaced with genuine Rolex components.

3. Movement inspection

At the Rolex headquarters, the movement is inspected and, if necessary, serviced to the same precision and reliability standards applied to new watches.

4. Cosmetic restoration

The case and bracelet are refinished to bring them as close as possible to their original condition, without altering the model's characteristics.

5. Certificate and warranty stamp

Once all checks are passed, the watch receives a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned authenticity certificate and a two-year international warranty, with a specific stamp that distinguishes it from a new watch while confirming full compliance with Rolex standards.

Who carries out the certification

Certification is carried out by Rolex itself, at the headquarters of the dealer's country or at the relevant reference headquarters where a country doesn't have its own — not by independent external labs, nor by the dealer alone. That's why, in the eyes of the market, the certification carries the same weight as buying a new Rolex — and why the watch comes with a two-year international Rolex warranty once the process is complete.
